Our Favourite Trivia:

Director Cameo: Outside the courthouse holding a camera as Robert Tisdall escapes.

Though this movie is officially based on the novel “A Shilling for Candles,” Alfred Hitchcock and his writers only used about one-third of the novel, and changed the identity of the murderer. The novel is a whodunit centered on the Scotland Yard inspector, who is Tey’s regular character Alan Grant.

The name of the murderer is never mentioned in dialogue. Christine never says it, and the musicians refer to him only as “Old Man.” In the original story, the character is Edward Champneis, but in the end credits, he’s listed only as “Guy.”

Nova Pilbeam was only 17 when she made this movie, while Derrick De Marney (Robert), who falls in love with Erica (Pilbeam) was 31.
