Shocking audience members as well as every Box Office analyst yuppie across America was The Purge, which stole #1 with a whopping $36 million, according to studio estimates, this past weekend, doubling even the boldest predictions. People apparently love the idea of getting to torture for 12 hours straight. Maybe we’ll see a new Amendment soon.
Slowing down to #2 was Fast & Furious 6 with $19.7m for a $202m total. The film is racing towards $600m worldwide and will be the biggest in the series in just a few days. With plenty of gas still in the tank. Oh, there’s a million of ’em!
Now You See Me had an excellent hold with $19.5m for a $61m total, now heading towards $100m. This is starting to look like the surprise hit of the summer.
Way back in #4 was Internship with an $18m opening. Vince and Owen just do not have the same clout as they used to, even with all of that free advertising from Google.
Rounding out the top 5 was Epic, with $12m for an $84m total. Pretty poor for a summer animated film, and far from epic.
Much Ado About Nothing scalded in limited releases with $186K from only 5 theaters. Listen to the Hollywood Outsider later this week for final numbers as well as to hear all about next week’s releases.
To hear all about this weekends upcoming releases, including Man of Steel and This Is the End, be sure to listen to this week’s HO – Episode 96 – Now You See HOs.
