Tom Cruise gunned his way to the top with Oblivion, his biggest opener since 2005 (outside of Mission Impossible films).  According to studio estimates, Oblivion swept up about $38 million this weekend and gave Cruise a much-needed megahit.  His star has taken a hit the last few years, starting with his crazy couch bouncing, but he keeps proving that he is still very much a movie star. With huge openings overseas as well, where Cruise is still a huge star, this latest foray into sci-fi seems to have paid off for the aging Maverick.

HOlding up great at #2 was 42 with $18m, a drop of only 34%, for a $54m total.  Great for any film, especially a baseball biography pic.  Looks like this could be the first $100m baseball flick since A League of Their Own.

The Croods, recently approved for a sequel, had another great hold at $9.5m for a $154m total.  Scary Movie 5 plummeted 55% to $6.2m for $22m total and virtually guaranteeing the franchise is done.  G.I. Retaliation held tough at #5 with $5.7m and $111m total.  Still just ok numbers here, but overseas the film is huge.

Popping in at #6 is the indie pic The Place Beyond the Pines with $4.7 for an $11.4m total.  That isn’t huge, but it’s much better than people originally thought.  Olympus Has Fallen fell to 7th with $4.5m for $88.8m total, and Evil Dead dropped to 8th with $4.1m for $48.4m total.  Both films have done enough to warrant sequels, though neither will be in the Top 10 much longer.
