Well, Wreck-It Ralph destroyed the competition with a $49 million opening and a CinemaScore rating of A. Seeing that it’s a family film, and one of the biggest of the holiday season, expect Ralph to be knocking it down for some time.
A HUGE surprise was Flight. Opening in less than 1900 theaters, Flight actually had a higher per screen average than Ralph and flew in $24.9m for the weekend. That’s almost unheard of for a limited theater release that doesn’t have Tyler Perry dressed up like a middle-age woman. And with a CinemaScore rating of A-, as well as you can count on more theaters being added this week, this flick should stick around for a bit. Congrats, Denzel. I guess you really don’t have to bother with that St. Elsewhere reunion after all.
Argo once again dipped by 15.5% to $10.2m and now the total stands at $75.8m, a pretty good bet that it hits $100m. Go Affleck, it’s your birthday! Go, Go, Argo…too much? Ok, in less peppy news, Man with the Iron Fists opened to a pidly $7.9m. That means it got its ass BEAT DOWN! This also proves that just because you SAY a film was ‘Presented’ by Quentin Tarantino, doesn’t mean people are fooled into thinking he actually directed it. Audiences only gave it a C+ rating so expect this to hit itunes and Blu Ray in no time.
Taken 2 is still holding up, with $5.9m for a $125m total, it’s still in the top 5 . Cloud Atlas dropped to $5.3m for an $18.3m total.
