Weekend Box Office – Jan 25-27

hanselandgretel

Well, January is usually slow and this weekend wasn’t much of an exception.  Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters slayed its way to the top (yea, that just happened) with an estimated $19m.  Not bad, but not great either and you can pretty much cancel any plans of a Hansel & Gretel 2.

The Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton take on the grown-up Grimm Stories siblings did decent business and beat the other 2 new releases by a long shot.  Jason Statham 47, or Parker as it’s called here, opened at #5 with only $7m…a pittance of his former self as the action star has released too many films in too many years and has self-imploded his own career.  Also, Movie 43 opened at #7, that movie with every Hollywood actor working and tons of directors coming to together to make one film – yea, it flopped with only $5m.  And also, critics DESTROYED it.

In returning films, Mama held on pretty strong at #2 with $12.8m for a $48m total and the film is already profitable.  Silver Linings Playbook has the smallest drop at only -7% to $10m for a $69.4 total.  The film seems on course for $100m total now.  Lastly, Zero Dark Thirty held on decent at $9.8m, but slipping -38% for a $69.9m total, $100m might be just a hair out of reach.

Also, Skyfall – opened to over $34m in 7 days in China, making it the largest opening EVER there!  With $1.08 BILLION worldwide, the latest Bond will soon overtake Dark Knight Rises at the worldwide box office.  James Bond is just the MAN!

To hear about this upcoming weekend’s releases, reviews of John Dies at the End, Silver Linings Playbook and Broken City…as well as to hear our thoughts on what constitutes ripping a film off, listen to our latest HO.  Come back later this week for an all new HO!
