Weekend Box Office – It’s Painful

Michael Bay conquered the box office yet again with his bodybuilders turned kidnapping entrepreneurs flick Pain and Gain, as the film launched with $20 million according to studio estimates.  Bay is no stranger to #1, as only The Island hasn’t hit it for him, and the combination of Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson proved too informidable for audiences to pass up.  With a CinemaScore rating of only C+, as well as Iron Man 3 in the waiting, the long term prospects for Pain and Gain do look slim. Be sure to check out our review if you’re still on the fence with this one.

Back in #2 was Tom Cruise and his Oblivion, which we reviewed on this week’s show, with $17.4m and a $64.7m total.  Dropping 52% is not a good sign, and at this point the film looks to top out at about $100m, with another $200m coming form overseas.

42 held strong at #3 with $10.7m and $69m total, en route to $100m as well.  The Big Wedding was an even bigger flop with $7.5m en route to a Redbox near you.  Rounding out the top 5 was The Croods with $6.6m for a $163m and a sequel coming.  In very limited release, Mud took $2m for a decent average but no chance for expansion.  The reviews for Mud have been fantastic.

Oh, if you’re not American you got to see Iron Man 3 this weekend as it debuted in most international markets (minus a handful including China & Germany) to the tune of $195m, bigger than even The Avengers.  Wow.  With reviews checking in currently at 93% positive, Iron Man 3 is poised to own the box office this coming weekend.  Welcome back, Tony Stark.

Be sure to listen to our most recent HO where we review Oblivion as well as discuss the impending release of the aforementioned…Iron Man Tres.  As well as come back Thursday for an all new episode or The Hollywood Outsider!
