Weekend Box Office – Iron Man’s Global Domination

Who cares about the rest of the box office when 80% of this past weekend was dominated by one film – Iron Man 3.  Tony Stark and friends opened this weekend to $174.1 million, the 2nd biggest opening weekend EVER!  And since The Avengers held the largest opening with $207m last year, Robert Downey Marvel…, I mean Jr., can now claim the two biggest opening weekends ever.  Not bad for a guy this close to doing cable television less than a decade ago.

CinemaScore exit polls showed that audiences are digging the film with a solid ‘A’ rating, meaning the film should hold a little better than Iron Man 2 did.  If it manages to hold even fairly well, it will topple $400m with no problems, and a possibility for $500m.  As filming gears up for Avengers 2 next year, expect Downey, Jr. to get one of the largest salaries for an actor ever.  Lots of ever’s here, and it seems he is worth every one of them.

Internationally, Iron Man 3 has already taken  in over $500m so it now has over $680m total worldwide, the flick should easily hit the $1 Billion mark before it’s all said and done.

As for the remainder of the top 5 – Pain and Gain got pummeled by 63% down to $7.5m for a measly $33.8m total.  Look for maybe $40m by the end of its run.  42 dropped to $6m for a $78m total, pretty much locking itself out of the $100m race.  Oblivion suffered a similar fate with a drop to $5.6m and $75m total.  Rounding out the top 5 was The Croods with $4.2m for a $168m total.

Be sure to read our Iron Man 3 review and listen to our all-new HO now available here, where we review Pain and Gain as well as look at this coming weekend’s new releases!  Come  back on Thursday for an all-new HO where all of the HO’s offer their thoughts on Iron Man 3.
