Weekend Box Office – Evil Wins

evil dead 1

Director Fede Alvarez accomplished something original director Sam Raimi never did, his Evil Dead opened at #1 for the weekend 4/5-7.  Granted, Raimi and original series star Bruce Campbell waved their magic wands to get it done, but still – Fede will always have that.  Another feat?  The $25.7 million weekend was more than all 3 of the original Evil Dead films made in total…combined!  Even with inflation, the new film should have no problem maintaining that record as this latest incarnation of Evil Dead has a pretty healthy start.

While the film was critically well received, a CinemaScore rating of C+ indicates the film might not have long legs.  Not sure if it’s for you?  Read our Evil Dead review here.

Coming in 2nd was last week’s hero – G.I. Joe: Retaliation held strong with $20.8m for an $86.4 million total.  Not as good as the 1st film, but overseas it’s cleaning up so Part 3 is in full force.  The Croods continued their strong holds with $20.6m for $125m total.  There’s an outside shot the film hits $200m, but don’t bet your cave on it.

Opening in #4 was 1993’s Jurassic Park 3D with $18.6m.  It’s about dinosaurs…IN YOUR FACE!  And people loved it.  Overseas is where this reissue will really clean up, but still a nice turnout for a 20 year old CGI flick.  Rounding out the top 5 was Olympus Has Fallen.  Holding much better than A Good Day To Die Hard, this new McClane has made more than that dud now with $71m total, on its way to $90m or so.
