Weekend Box Office Dec 28 – 30

hobbit

Peter Jackson’s newest flick continues to rule them all as The Hobbit held strong at #1 with $32 million for a $222m total here in good ole’ North America, meanwhile the film continues to swallow trolls worldwide as the film is over $500m already.

As far as the new Christmas Day openers, Django Unchained trailed all week, but this weekend it creeped up and stole the #2 spot with $30.6m for a $64m total.  Tarantino’s latest attack on the N-word is performing ahead of his last flick, Inglorious Basterds by a decent margin.  Les Miserables, the adaptation of that feel-good musical, had a strong opening weeekend with $28m for a $67m total.  With a solid A CinemaScore rating, expect Les Mis to play for some time.

Opening at #4, Parental Guidance gave work to Bette Midler and Billy Crystal with $14.8m and $29.5m since opening Christmas Day.  Not quite the spanking they were hoping for, but a decent time-out none-the-less.  Jack Reacher held on decently at #5 with $14m and $44m total.  Not bad, but not good enough for a new franchise for Cruise.

This Is 40 held on at #6 w/ $13m for a $37m total after 2 weekends.  A pretty mediocre result for the Knocked Up spin-off.   #7 saw Lincoln bring in yet another $7.5m for a $132m total, truly remarkable for a historical biography.  And finally, Seth Rogen’s latest flop placed at #8 with $6.7m for a pathetic $21m after 2 weeks.

Come back later this week when we’ll discuss this weekend as well as next weekend’s upcoming releases. Until then, enjoy our Best of 2012 Episode:
