Stallone’s old-men-0n-a-mission opus ‘The Expendables 2’ repeated #1 at the North American Box Office this weekend with $13.4 million, according to final numbers. That puts the film at $52.2m to date…about $12m behind the total of the 1st Expendables, but the 2nd weekend hold was roughly the same. Look for Expendables 2 to end up about $80m, or about 20% behind the 1st film. A 3rd film will be determined on how it plays overseas so stay tuned. Explosive experts and burly stunt men are waiting with baited breath. Listen to our review of The Expendables 2 on the new HO:
When it comes to new releases, nothing made a dent at the Box Office except for a conservative documentary on the Prez: 2016 Obama’s America expanded and grossed $6.5m from only 1091 theaters. That’s a LOT of tea baggers gathering no moss. Apparently moviegoers weren’t aware there was an election coming and you’ll be seeing a LOT of Obama in the coming months. In all seriousness, the film is actually getting quite a bit of traction as a somewhat fair look at Big O, even with it’s Right Wing slant. We’ll take a look at it soon and let you know our thoughts.
The other new releases, Premium Rush, Hit & Run and The Apparition, were dead in the water. Rush managed $6m, Hit & Run $4.5m ($5.7m since its Wed opening) and The Apparition only mustered $2.8m. This was not a weekend people were dying to go to the movies….either that or they are against bike-messengers, hard driving slackers and ghost movies with leftover cast members from the CW. With Labor Day signaling the end of summer, don’t expect any other Box Office titans until at least the end of September. If you haven’t, listen to our review of Hit & Run here:
As for carryovers? Bourne Legacy dropped down to $9.3m for an $85m total. No word on if this series will continue w/ Jeremy Renner as this result is much less than the studio hoped for. Paranorman held on decent, but not great, for a family film with $8.6m and a $28m total. The Odd Life of Tim Green actually held on strong with $7.1m for a $27m total. The Campaign dropped to $7.4m to a $64m total and Dark Knight Rises actually rose to #5 with $7.2m and $422 total. Batman, in its 6th weekend, was still more popular than EVERY new release and should pass The Lion King on Monday or Tuesday for the #10 all-time spot.
Come back later this week for a new Ep of The HO where we review the upcoming horror flick V/H/S as well as Premium Rush.
