Well Bruce Willis proved once again that nothing can keep a good McClane down, especially 2 McClane’s, in his latest inclination of his signature role ‘A Good Day To Die Hard’ opened at #1 with $25 million for the weekend according to studio estimates. With $33m since its Valentine’s Day release, the 5th flick in the franchise actually opened less than Live Free Or Die Hard from several years ago. Worldwide, Die Hard 5 raked in $80m worldwide for the biggest worldwide debut in the franchise’s history. There might be one more in the pipeline.
Identity Thief held strong at #2 with $23.4m for a $70m total en route to $100m. Melissa McCarthy is officially a movie star. Safe Haven opened very strong at #3 with $21.4m for $30m since its VD debut. The latest Nicholas Sparks received horrendous reviews, but dammit! People still want to enjoy the love.
At #4 was the latest CGI animated flop Escape From Planet Earth with $16m. Not a good start and animated films do not seem to hit unless they’re from Disney or Dreamworks. Warm Bodies continues to hold very strong with $9m for a $50m total. Beautiful Creatures was the biggest disappointment of the weekend as many predicted it would launch a new franchise, yet only managed to open with $7.4m. That’s an ugly opening.
