Director Cameo: Ted Kotcheff plays Richard’s father. The scene was directed by Andrew McCarthy, as revealed in his book “Brat.”

This film is actually based on the plot of a very low budget Hindi film from 1983 called Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro.

This was considered as a vehicle for Corey Haim and Corey Feldman early in production before it was decided to make the leads older.

While part of the film was shot during a heatwave in New York City, the majority was filmed in North Carolina which was a stand in for the Hamptons, where Bernie’s summer beach house is located in the film.

Andrew McCarthy was asked to read the script to think about playing the part of Richard. When he read it, he loved the part of Larry, and got that instead. Jon Cryer was originally cast as Larry, but McCarthy replaced him.

Terry Kiser’s stunt double suffered a few broken ribs during filming, mostly in the scene in which Bernie is dragged around the surface of the ocean, bumping into metal floating buoys.

Bernie’s house was a set built at the south end of Fort Fisher Natural Recreation Area. It was demolished at the end of the movie.
