Out today, as we discussed in Episode 82 of The HO, Oz the Great & Powerful is poised to trample all other newcomers. Sam Raimi’s inventive take on the classic Wizard of Oz has claimed all media space for the last week as the towering film poses to be the first great event film of the year.  Here are the details for rest of the new releases:

Oz – The Great & Powerful: James Franco stars as the Wizard everyone is off to see and this film shows how he became the man behind the curtain. Directed by Sam Raimi, the film is going for bright and cheery, with some dark undertones.  Also starring Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis & Michelle Williams – this will be the family film of the spring.  Reviews are mixed right now at 56% so check the reviews if you’re debating.  This was the HO Pick of the Week.

Dead Man Down – The original director of Girl w the Dragon Tattoo, Niels Oplev, comes this new action flick that pairs box office poison Colin Farrell & up and comer Noomi Rapace as two people both motivated by revenge.  The film is currently showing a 41% on Rotten Tomatoes…looks like a wait for video flick for most.

Emperor – Matthew Fox and Tommy Lee Jones star in this story about the events following America’s occupation of Japan after their surrender at the end of World War II. Reviews are at 35% which means HELLLLLLLLLLLLL NO!  Wait for video.
