New Releases – Sep 28

Time for new releases.  This week, there’s 3 wide releases – 1 for Sci-fi fans, 1 for kids and 1 for people that need a little F the System! in their weekend. You can hear more about them here on last week’s Ep 60:

Looper – Joseph Gordon-Levitt tries to parlay his Dark Knight Rises mojo into an action hit of his own, dragging Bruce Willis along for the ride.  Gordon-Levitt plays Joe, a Looper from the future who essentially goes back in time 30 years to a pre-determined spot to wait for, and kill cleanly, whomever the mob needs removed.  When the mob sends back an older Joe (Willis) and he realizes he has to kill himself – well all hell breaks loose.  Emily Blunt also co-stars as Sara, Joe’s woman…or is flippin’ Sarah CONNOR?!?!?!? We have no idea, but the film is getting great reviews so this was our pick of the week from Ep 60.

Hotel Translyvania – Adam Sandler voices Dracula in this CGI-animated flick about a lavish, 5-stake resort (see what I did there?) where the world’s legendary monsters all come to vacation.  Things go crazy when an ordinary dude crashes the resort and falls for Dracula’s daughter, Mavis.  Let’s ignore the fact that Dracula is dead so how did the dude procreate and focus on the fact that this is an Adam Sandler flick through-and-through.  The Sandler film staples show up to lend their voices (Kevin James, David Spade, Steve Buscemi, etc) and reviews are decent, but not great.  Should be a safe bet for young kids.  Kids dumb enough to be cool with a dead guy somehow making babies.

Won’t Back Down – This isn’t destined to make much at the box office, especially considering the reviews are pretty weak and a film like this NEEDS strong reviews to sell itself.  Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis star as two determined mothers who are relentless in their pursuit to change their children’s inner city school.  Of course they must push forward against all sorts of shady men in suits who want to keep kids dumb enough to think vampires can procreate, and they must WIN!  It’s one of those movies.  We were all interested in the flick, but reviews have been weak so this looks to be a ‘wait for video’ recommendation.
