Folks, I’m not going to beat around the bush on this one. Normally I try to find ways to give every not-so-great film experience a positive twist, but with Uncork’d Entertainment’s newest release BLOOD MOON there just isn’t. From start to finish, BLOOD MOON is an uninspired, uninteresting film that seems more than happy to wallow around in its less-than-mediocre status. I suppose in a way that’s a positive – BLOOD MOON doesn’t hang its head or seem apologetic in any way about what it is, or – more to the point – what it’s not, that being a scary, entertaining film.
Billed as “Cowboys versus Werewolves,” BLOOD MOON tells the tale of a group of travelers in the Old West who have to band together for survival in a town being attacked by skinwalkers. That sounds like it should be pretty cool, right? Well, shame on you for thinking it, ‘cause it’s not. Not even a little. But, I’m not the kind of reviewer who enjoys reveling in negativity, so I’m not going to list point by point all the ways in which this movie fails. Suffice it to say, from the wooden writing straight through to the paint-by-numbers score, nothing elevates this film above the level of a first year film student project. Nothing.
Okay, well, not entirely nothing. If a silver bullet filled gun were put to my head and I had to come up with a compliment for BLOOD MOON, I suppose I’d say that not all of the actors in the movie are terrible. Shaun Dooley (The Woman In Black) comports himself as well as he can under the burden of Jeremy Wooding’s lack of directorial ability and Alan Wightman’s leaden dialog. And then there’s…well, on second thought, that’s about it. Out of everything BLOOD MOON has to offer, he is its one dimly shining star.
Honestly, give this movie a pass. If you want to watch a good werewolf combat movie, go rent DOG SOLDIERS, or if you want something that has some depth to the characters, then seek out GINGER SNAPS. Heck, AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, even decades later, still terrifies. BLOOD MOON is simply a waste of your money, and even worse it’s a waste of your time. Save both and avoid it.
